Mindfulness March

We’re at the start of a new month, March.  So why not start a new mindfulness practice?
I don’t know about you guys but for me, my phone is a huge distraction.

Have you ever had those days when you get home, sit down, check your phone and a kazillion hours later you’ve found yourself down a rabbit hole scrolling social media feeds or caught up in more work? This is definitely me.

So, my new mindfulness practice for this month is, to not do this.

mindfulness marchTo help me make this happen I have created an adorable little home for my much-appreciated phone. Every day when I get home, my phone goes into its happy new home.

When the time comes that I need to use my phone, (or choose to).  The plan is, that I have to stay in the area of this one spot while I use my phone.

It’s kind of a throwback to the days where everything wasn’t wireless.

Remember those times when phone cords were attached to the wall?  Okay, so I’m dating myself.  Long story short, if you wanted to talk to a friend for hours at a time (yes hours) you would have to sit in that one spot where your corded phone lived (which was usually in the middle of your family room- where everyone was hanging out)

So that’s the idea.  I’m starting this practice in hopes that confining me to one spot will help make my phone use thought out and mindful.

This is the beginning of my new mindfulness practice.

Are you doing any mindfulness practices? Inspire others by sharing what you’re doing.

Guest Blog: How to be a Healthy in a Toxic World by Dr. Sara Celik, ND

How To Be Healthy In a Toxic World

Do you have stubborn unexplained symptoms? Are you feeling fatigued and run-down? Have you ever considered that toxins could be the underlying problem?

There’s no denying that we live in a toxic world— each day we slather chemicals on our skin, eat foods that lack nutrients, breathe in polluted air, and forget the importance of slowing down.

Today’s norm is demanding, taxing, and utterly exhausting.

With greater demands being placed on our detoxification organs, cleansing the body of toxins is more important today than ever before.

Dr. Sara’s Detox Tips:

  1. Increase Water and Daily Fibre

The average patient I see is dehydrated. Rather than relying on caffeinated beverages and/or sugar-packed juices, choose detox water to help flush toxins from the body. Detox water is super easy to make — simply add lemons, limes, cucumber, ginger, or fresh mint leaves to purified, filtered water.

Inadequate fibre leads to constipation and creates a stagnant, sluggish colon. To get the most benefit from a cleanse, ensure 30–40 grams of fibre per day. Without adequate fibre, toxins are not fully removed via the bowels, which leads to toxins being re-circulated.

2. Opt for a Full Body Cleanse Program (7 day or 30 day)

A total body cleanse enhances the elimination of toxins from ALL 7 channels of elimination (liver, lymphatic system, lungs, blood, colon, kidneys, skin). Although cleanses often focus solely on the colon, a complete cleansing program will address the whole body and is a more holistic approach.

A variety of herbal ingredients such as burdock root, dandelion root, and milk thistle work to support liver detoxification. Red clover flower is an excellent skin cleanser, while mullein leaf is a soothing expectorant herb that reduces mucous and congestion. The key benefits of a total body cleansing kit are that it contains a variety of herbal ingredients designed to maximize detoxing from all 7 channels of elimination.

3. Deep Breathe, Rest Well, and De-Stress

In this fast-paced world, it’s easy to forget to slow down. Cleansing requires energy. The best way to supply the organs of elimination with the fuel they need is by getting plenty of rest. Rather than browsing the internet before bed, put all devices down and practice deep breathing — inhaling and exhaling through the nose.

Are you surprised that I didn’t tell you to stop eating carbs? Wondering why I didn’t mention following a strict diet?

Here’s why.

Drastic dietary changes can be overwhelming and are not necessary to reap the benefits of an herbal cleanse. Although I encourage eating nutritious foods — the more you eat, the better — the herbs will do their job regardless of what you are eating.

These three steps are most important when it comes to cleansing. If they seem too easy, remember, it’s the small steps we take that have the greatest impact on our health.

Happy Cleansing!

Clean up your cleaning supplies!

How Clean are Your Cleaning Supplies?

Spring is in the air, and with the spring comes the ultimate time to detox your home! But, did you ever think that your cleaning supplies cupboard may need a little detox action as well?

The Dirt on Conventional Cleaning Supplies

The truth is that most commonly used cleaning supplies… just aren’t that clean. Yes, they’re designed to kill bacteria, but what they often end up leaving in its place is a toxic residue that can arguably be just as bad if not worse than bacteria build-up.

Here are just a few of the harmful ingredients commonly found in “conventional” cleaning supplies:

  • PERC (Perchmoroethylene):  Found in spot removers and carpet cleaners, as well as dry cleaning solutions, this one is probably one of the top TO AVOID chemicals. It is a neurotoxin that may cause some seriously scary symptoms when inhaled, such as dizziness and coordination-loss.
  • Triclosan: A chemical found in most dishwashing detergents & hand soaps.  This aggressive antibacterial agent is known to have some carcinogenic properties, and it may also promote the growth of resistant bacteria if overused.  It’s been found in rivers and streams and has a toxic effect to plants and animals.
  • Chlorine: Used in copious amount of cleaning products ranging from toilet cleaners, to dish detergents, to bleach, to disinfectants… the list goes on.  In high concentrations (like in cleaning products) it is corrosive and can irritate the skin.  Breathing in too many fumes may lead to lung problems or respiratory tract damage.
  • Ammonia:  Found in glass cleaners, tile and bathroom cleaners, and other polishing agents, this chemical is a major respiratory tract irritant.  It’s extremely volatile meaning that it evaporates into a gas to be easily inhaled and cause irritant issues in the body.
  • Pthalates: Used in products with fragrances… so like.. every chemical cleaner available. These guys are definitely worth avoiding if you’re a male who values his testosterone levels, or a woman who’d rather not throw off her estrogen levels.  Pthalates are known endocride disruptors and can lead to a host of different issues in both men and women.  If a product is labeled as having a “fragrance”, be cautious and aware that it’s more than likely pthalate-containing.  Pthalates can be absorbed through inhalation and through skin contact.

Good News is that There are Healthier Options!

The truth is, that the discovery of bacteria that caused disease happened FAR before the use of harsh synthetic chemicals.  The use of man-mixed, and bottled chemicals started their major climb in popularity and market saturation during the industrial revolution.  They were a byproduct of booming production in many cases and just-so-happened to also work wonders at killing bacteria.  The one, very overlooked problem with most of them… they also harm the good bacteria and cells and thus, harm the environment, humans and animals.

Prior to the use of these chemicals, man discovered many natural anti-bacterial agents that were not detrimental to humans, the environment or animals.  Although it may sound far too good to be true, believe it or not, the earth is full of natural treasures.  It’s almost as if mother nature wants to help keep the Earth’s inhabitants alive… like for real, not for money.

Here are a few healthy ingredients to look for in your cleaning products:

  • Baking Soda: Baking soda, aka sodium bicarbonate, is a slightly basic solution that helps to cut through grime.  It’s naturally antibacterial and it absorbs odour. It’s also extremely cost effective, and won’t harm you or the environment! Many natural cleaning products available today use baking soda as one of their main ingredients.
  • Essential OilsEssential oils have been used for centuries for a variety of different things.  One of their main uses is as a natural disinfectant, anti-fungal and antibacterial agent.  There are many, many different essential oils, and some are more effective than others at getting the cleaning job done.  One of the very best in this department is tea tree oil.  Another fantastic essential oil blend that has antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties is Thieves Oil.  Often, natural cleaning products on the market today use essential oils as both an antibacterial agent and a natural non-toxic fragrance!
  • Vinegar: This guy has long been known to be an effective natural disinfectant.  More than likely, the use of this natural substance as a cleaner is no news to your grandmother! Vinegar is a weak acetic acid that is formed by the fermentation of sugar and starches.  It’s acidic make up helps it to kill bacteria and microbes, naturally. It’s also a great stain remover, and can be used as an alternative to bleach. When used in conjunction with baking soda, the two work to cut grease and grime.
  • Castile Soap: Castile soaps are olive oil based soaps that are biodegradable, antibacterial and stain-fighting! This soap has been used for centuries in Europe and is great for most household cleaning jobs including dish-washing, DIY laundry soaps, bathroom cleaning and stain removing!

Healthy Bed

How Important Is the Health of Your Bed?

Have you ever thought about how much time you spend on your bed in a 24 hour period? Like… a third of it.  For most of us, the importance of how healthy our environment is on the daily, is rarely applied to our sleep environment.  Even the few who do apply it regularly to their sleeping environment, rarely think about their bed as being “healthy” or “unhealthy”.  It’s time to change that. Here are some pretty ugly truths about the very thing you spend a third of your life on.

Conventional Bed Ingredients.

What are they made of?

The world of conventional beds is very comparable to that of conventional clothing, or even food.  It’s just not made of the right stuff. Somewhere along the line cheap materials, cheap manufacturing and cheap point of sale became the main priority.  Unfortunately, this just is not acceptable.  Here’s why:

The components of a conventional bed and their make-ups are as follows:

  • Chemicals: Generally, the mattress industry tends to use a wide variety of chemicals in the making and “protection” of their mattresses.  Solvents, glues, and fire retardants are just some of the chemicals used in the mattress-making industry. These chemicals can irritate the skin, eyes & lungs, and are often known carcinogens. 😐 #nothanks
  • Foams made of Synthetics & Petroleum Byproducts: The soft part of the mattress is usually made of synthetic materials, and often contains petrochemical derivatives. What does this mean? It means they’re made of toxin-ridden materials that restrict the breathability of your skin, while simultaneously contributing to the overall toxicity of your skin which absorbs the chemicals that come in contact with it. Synthetic foam mattresses also hold onto sweat & allergens and become the perfect habitat for bacteria build-up, and mites to live. On top of all of that, they’re also produced by an industry that immensely harms the environment. Um. Yikes.
  • Box Springs: A lot of conventional mattresses include a box spring component.  These spring systems provide extremely unnatural support for all parts of the body.  They can cause aches and pains all over.  Being that they’re made of a metal, they can also disrupt your body’s electromagnetic field (EMF) which in turn can disrupt the quality of sleep you get.
  • Waterbeds and Airbeds: Waterbed & airbeds both use electric pumps & heaters to help them keep their form.  In addition to the fact that they can cause some seriously odd sleeping positions that don’t benefit the body at all, they can also have an EMF disrupting effect. Like synthetic foams, they also don’t breathe, which can make it hard to regulate your body temperature while sleeping.
  • Memory Foam: Memory foam is all the rage in the modern bed industry.  Unfortunately it is little known that the components of this ever-popular foam is riddled with toxic chemicals and flame retardants.  The surface also lacks breathability, causing temperature regulation issues. #notthebest
  • Sheets: Much the same as mattress foams, and the world of modern day, cheaply made, and mass produced clothing materials… sheets often fail to meet normal healthy standards. Often, they contain toxic chemicals, dyes, and synthetic materials that are not breathable, and allow for a build up of bacteria and mites.

Healthier Alternatives

Not a huge fan of the conventional mattress ingredients? Neither were we. Fortunately, there are healthier options.

Things to look for in a bed:

Healthy Mattresses & Sheets:

There are many different natural fibres that mattresses and sheets can be made of.  Some of the top naturally antibacterial, and breathable materials are organic cotton, wool, and organic bamboo!

Natural Wool Fibres:

You may know that wool happens to be one of our very favourite natural fibres for clothing at Health Essentials.  It’s also one of our favourite bed materials! Wool is naturally antibacterial, thermoregulating, flame resistant, and hypoallergenic. It’s also great for the environment when sourced from a premium farm! If you’re thinking: “WOW! That sounds like the exact opposite of synthetic materials!” Yup. You’re right. #yesplease Wool helps you to stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer, so it’s the ultimate duvet filling as well!!! Wool ventilates really well, and can absorb up to 30% of its weight in water without even feeling wet… so it’s ideal for humid climates…. AND sweaty sleepers. 😉 You can find wool mattresses and duvets on the market today! Check out some awesome sustainable & high quality mattresses at Shepherd’s Dream and Custom Woolen Mills 100% Wool Fill Bedding Duvets! #welovethem

Organic Bamboo:

Organic Bamboo can be a really sustainable, uber soft & comfortable option for natural sheets or mattress materials! Bamboo is also highly breathable, doesn’t want to hold onto bacteria and when organic, is free of chemicals & pesticides!

Organic Cotton:

There are many organic cotton sheets and mattresses available in the market today! Organic cotton is also breathable, hypoallergenic and antibacterial.  Check out Coyuchi Sheets which is a Californian company who sustainably and organically sources their materials!

Healthy Bed Frames

Choosing a bed frame material is more important than one may think.  Being sure to choose a bed that does NOT include box springs, metal, or chemically treated wood is of the utmost importance for your health and sleep quality! Here is what we have found to be the best option:

Slatted Wood Frame:

Slatted wooden frames allow for breathability through the mattress, provide natural support for the body, and don’t disrupt your body’s EMF. Look for a wooden frame that is sustainably sourced and free of chemical treatments!

Essential Oils Uses & Benefits

Fill your Home with the Scents you LOVE.. and Benefit!

The many uses & benefits of essential oils.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are natural oils typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic fragrances of the plant or other sources from which they are extracted.

History of Essential Oils.

Essential oils have been dated back to 2500-3000 B.C! They have been used all over the world for literally THOUSANDS of years!! These plant-derived oils have long provided us with many benefits including sensory enhancement (aromatic scents) – thus beauty care, as well as a lot of medicinal benefits.  Throughout history they have been used both internally and externally, although it is not advised to use essential oils internally unless directed by a healthcare professional.

Essential oils are used today in many different natural wellness fields! The main one by which most people associate essential oil use is Aromatherapy. It is also used in Ayurvedic Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Naturopathic Medicine and even in Conventional Medicine in certain parts of the world!

How are they used?

Essential oils can have many positive effects on the mind & body.  They can help us relax when we’re feeling stressed or anxious; they can energize us when we’re feeling sleepy or down; they can help ease headaches, and nausea; they can boost a wintery mood; and they can simply make the room and our bodies smell nice!

On our Bodies – Natural Beauty Care Products

Many essential Oils have an extremely pleasant aromatic scent making them fantastic for use as a natural perfume or fragrance.  Many natural skin care products use essential oils for a fresh, floral, energizing, or calming effect.

In our Homes – Diffused into the Air

Diffusing essential oils into the air can help to disinfect the air, add a pleasant smell into a room, and can enhance a calm or energized state. There are a few ways that essential oils can be diffused into the air.

The traditional method of doing this is heating the oil directly over a flame, or boiling a few drops in water.  These are both effective methods, so long as a good portion of your attention can be directed toward the heating oils as to not start an accidental fire.

Nowadays, diffusing essential oils into the air is much more efficient, and far less dangerous.  Modern day diffusers have sensors that auto-shut off when the water levels get low, and in most cases don’t use much heat at all to produce steam!

This EcoSpa Deluxe Ultrasonic Diffuser has multiple mist options, an auto-shut off and a light on/off button! It also has a very appealing shape and design, so you can feel great about making it a part of any room! 🙂

Marseille’s Remedy – The History, The Blend & The Benefits.

Marseille’s Remedy
The History, The Blend & The Benefits

The Historic Folklore of This Famous Remedy

According to the long-told historic tale…. The use of thieves oil dates alllll the way back to the year 1413.  The time of the infamous Bubonic Plague (aka The Black Death) that devastated a large portion of France.  The Black Death spread like wild-fire amongst the citizens, and the doctors alike.  It seemed impossible to be in the vicinity without contracting it, and at the time, the sickness really did mean ultimate demise.

During this time, however, four thieves were captured and charged for stealing from the sick and dying.  The thieves never contracted the plague, despite the close contact with the Black-Death victims.

At this time, the crime these 4 men committed was punishable by burning alive.  The judge was so intrigued by how these men had stayed immune to this terrible disease, that he told them if they shared their secret he would spare them of this punishment.

The Thieves told the judge their secret: they were perfume & spice merchants who were unemployed due to the closure of the sea ports and the devastation of the plague.  They had prepared an essential oil recipe that when applied to their hands, ears, temples, feet & a mask over their mouths, kept them safe from infection.  The judge stayed true to his word.  The men were not burned alive, but instead they were hanged for their crimes.

Thieves Oil History of Black Death Doctor

From then on, the doctors who treated the Black Death victims put the herbal infusion on their hands, ears, temples & feet, and wore beak-like masks stuffed with cloths containing this special blend.  The beak is how doctors got the long-lasting nickname “quack”. You may recognize this somewhat terrifying uniform as a scary Hallowe’en costume worn today.   Exactly the way you’d want your doctor to dress, right? AH!

The Blend

Marseille’s Remedy is a blend of 5 essential oils:

Syzygium aromaticum

Citrus limon

Cinnamomum verum

Eucalyptus globulus

Rosmarinus officinalis
Thieves Oil rosemary Blend

Benefits & Uses

This versatile blend can be used for more than just the Bubonic Plague due to its now well-known anti-bacterial, anti-fungal & anti-viral properties!

Here are some of the ways that this remedy can be put to use as a natural alternative to many of the chemical-filled & toxic bacteria fighting products on the market today!

  • Add a few drops to water & use as a hand sanitizer!
  • Diffuse into the air to clear phlegm and congested airways
  • Mix with carrier oil such as jojoba oil and apply topically to relieve inflammation
  • Diffuse into the air to kill air-borne pathogens

  • Dilute in water and use as a natural bug repellant.

Mommy & Baby Immunity

Babies, pregnant momma’s to be, and new mothers are perhaps the most susceptible family members to the colds & flus that circle around throughout the school year! If you’re currently expecting, planning to conceive, or are the parent of a little one, here are some tips and tools that you can use to ensure that you and/or your precious newly born stay healthy this school year. 🙂

First, let’s talk Baby Immunity:

If you’re a new parent, you’re likely VERY aware that there is only a short list of things that are “safe” to give to babies! This poses a bit of a challenge when trying to keep your baby’s immune system strong.  Good news though, there are definitely some things you can do to prevent sicknesses in your precious little one! Here are our favourite baby immune system boosters:

Baby-Safe Probiotics:

There are some extremely effective and baby-friendly probiotic supplements available that can be used to help boost your baby’s immune system.  Probiotics are important for helping to build the body’s immune system, as immunity is largely linked to gut health!

One of the best baby probiotic supplements is BioGaia ProTectis, which is proven to be safe and effective for children and infants.  It is one patented bacteria strain that has fantastic benefits for improving and supporting gut health.

Vitamin D:

Vitamin D plays a major role in keeping our bodies healthy throughout our lives, and that starts from infancy.  A great way to keep your baby healthy and improve their developing immune system, is ensuring adequate amounts of Vitamin D.

Nutristart Vitamin D Drops for Babies are easy to dose and give to your little one.  Just one drop into their mouth or a bottle of milk or formula daily can help support your child’s immune system.

Infant Cold Relief:

When a baby does contract a cold, there are but a few things you can give them to help alleviate the symptoms so they can sleep and be happy… and so can you.

A really great baby-friendly homeopathic formula is Boiron Coryzalia.  It can be used from just 1 month of age to help to alleviate cold symptoms such as a runny or stuffy nose.

Baby AND Mommy Food & Nutrition:

Adequate nutrition is key for ensuring that you and your baby are healthy enough to take on cold and flu season! Making sure to eat a whole-food diet rich in vegetables, healthy fats & protein will help to keep your body strong enough to tackle the cold & flu season(s) ahead.  Whether you’re pregnant, breast-feeding, or the parent of a new baby or toddler, keeping yourself healthy will help you to keep your littlest treasure (or treasure-to-be) healthy, too!

Breastfeeding Mommas*:

Breast feeding can provide an immense amount of nutrition for a baby. Natural breast milk is full of essential vitamins, minerals and immune factors that help support the health of a baby.  Ensuring adequate nutrition for your own body will ensure healthy milk production, and you may also want to take something to support natural lactation.

A fantastic supplement for supporting milk production is St. Francis Fenugreek & Blessed Thistle Lactation Support.  Both blessed thistle and fenugreek are herbs that have been used for centuries to promote healthy lactation.  This 5:1 extract is super potent has been pre-proportioned to the effective and healthy ratios of these herbs in one convenient capsule, so you have less to worry about! These awesome herbs are also great for regulating Mommy’s blood lipid levels as well as glucose levels, so you can feel great while helping your baby feel great!

Healthy Formulas:

If you’re not breastfeeding, don’t worry! There are plenty of nutrient rich formula recipes that you can put together quickly and easily for your little one! 🙂 The link below is to a few recipes from the Weston A. Price Foundation for home-made healthy formulas. There are cow-dairy, goat-milk and non-dairy options, so whatever your baby’s tolerances are, you can help keep them nourished and thriving!

Formula – Homemade Baby Formula

Prenatal Multi-Vitamins*:

When you are pregnant or breastfeeding, the nutritional demands of your body tend to skyrocket.  It can be hard to keep your energy levels up, while providing yourself and your baby with adequate nutrition.  A great way to make sure you’re covering all of your bases is to take a prenatal multivitamin.

One of the best prenatal blends available is MegaFoods Baby&Me.  MegaFoods sources their ingredients from whole food sources, so your body can absorb the nutrients right away!

Maintaining Mommy’s Health

Mamma-Friendly Probioitcs:

Whether you’re pregnant, currently breastfeeding, or have a baby at home, taking a probiotic supplement to keep your immune system boosted will ensure that you are able and available to keep your baby healthy!

One of our favourite probiotic supplement is Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics.  We love this probiotic because it has a blend of over 82 fermented vegetables, fruits & herbs and 12 live bacteria strains.  This whole-food prebiotic and probiotic duo is safe and effective for most anyone to take! It is the number one recommended probiotic by local herbalist and new mommy, Charity Parkinson, CH, HNC.

Cold & Flu Remedies for Pregnant Women*:

When you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you can run into a lot of the same problems as babies when it comes to supplementing to stay healthy or get healthy when you’ve come down with something.  Options tend to be pretty limited. But, there are some home remedies that you can rely on*, and of course you can increase nutritional intake.

Lemon tea*:

Lemon tea can be fantastic for soothing symptoms associated with a cold! Here is a recipe for lemon, honey and ginger tea.*

Chicken Broth:

Bone broth is fantastic for keeping any body healthy, and is really great for rebuilding worn down or sick bodies.  This recipe below can be made quickly and easily, is extremely soothing and tastes fantastic! Chicken broth has been prized for generations as the food you consume when sick… Our ancestors had it right! Chicken broth is high in an amino acid called cysteine, which helps to thin mucous so you can clear your congestion and breathe better!

Air Quality:

A really great way to ensure your entire household stays healthy is to improve the air quality in your home!  Most of the colds and flus going around are airborne bacteria and viruses, and if the environment in your home allows them to thrive, it can be pretty hard to avoid the rapid spread!

One way that you can improve the air quality in your home is by diffusing essential oils into the air! A safe and effective way of doing this is with a diffuser. The EcoSpa Ultrasonic Diffuser is a great option as it has an automatic shut off, a light on or off option, and a sleek look for any room.  Diffusers can be great in bedrooms or nurseries too, especially when the light can be switched off!

A fabulous essential oil blend for keeping everyone healthy is thieves oil!  Thieves oil has been used for centuries to sanitize the air and keep people healthy.  Marseilles Blend is made locally, on Saltspring Island, and uses the traditional essential oils in the important and effective ratios! It also smells amazing :).

Another great addition to the home environment to improve the air quality is indoor plants! Plants are extremely efficient at recycling and filtering the air in whatever environment they’re placed in.  They also help make your space feel cozier :)!

Click on the photo to check out an awesome list of 12 NASA-approved house plants that are best at keeping the air in your home clean!

*Please note that it is best to check with your health care practitioner prior to adding any herbs, supplements or foods you are not used to, into you or your baby’s diet when pregnant or breast feeding.

We hope you have a healthy school year, and that you’re able to utilize some of the suggestions above to keep yourself and your baby thriving, whatever time of year it is :)!

Benefits of Alkaline Mineral Water

alkaline water

You’ve probably heard the saying “you are what you eat”, describing the importance of providing our bodies with healthy food.

But, did you know that our bodies are made of over 60% water? It is equally as important to provide our bodies with healthy water, too.

The reason the earth can sustain life is because it has water. Nature provided us with sources of water all over the planet. Wherever there is life – plants, animals & humans – there is water. Unfortunately, a lot of the water that we have available to us today, in stores or from taps, looks NOTHING like what is was intended to by nature.

We all know by now that we shouldn’t be consuming processed foods… So what makes it “okay” to consume processed water?  Not all water is created equal, and water sourced to us through our taps or in stores is generally void of all of the amazing properties of natural, healthy water.

What makes water “healthy”?

Healthy water contains many essentials minerals, and is naturally alkaline.

Our bodies work hard every moment to keep us alive by maintaining a pH level of 7.36 (which is just slightly basic). In order to do this, the blood draws from stores of healthy minerals such as calcium, phosphorous and magnesium in our body.  If our bodies do not have adequate stores of these minerals, the blood is forced to draw them from organs, glands, and tissues, leaving these important components deficient and risking their proper function.

Drinking water that is alkaline, and full of many important minerals, is extremely important for ensuring our bodies won’t have to work too hard to keep our pH balanced and for the overall health of our entire body.

Healthy Water Options:

Finding a natural source.

If you’re lucky enough to live on the amazing West Coast, there could be a natural spring near you!
Check out this site to see if you can collect natural spring water near your home.

Get an Alkaline Mineralizing System.

If getting out to a natural spring doesn’t work for you, you’re not out of luck! There are many water filters available that will also remineralize and alkalinize your water.

Our very favourite water-alkalizing system is made by Santevia.

The Santevia Gravity Water System is a convenient way that you can filter and reinvigorate the water that comes straight from your tap – wherever you live. The full system can sit right on your counter, be filled with ease, and provide top quality, clean and pH balancing water right at home! It’s like having a natural spring right in your house!
